What are Census Block Groups?

A Census Block Group (CBG) is a geographical unit used by the United States Census Bureau. It is the smallest geographical unit for which demographic data is published. Typically, Block Groups are very small and include a population of 600 to 3,000 people. There are 217,740 CBGs in the USA.

Why Census Block Groups versus Zip Codes?

A Census Block Group (CBG) is the smallest geographical unit for which demographic data is published, allowing for the most precision and relevance in the market. Typically, Block Groups are very small and include a population of 600 to 3,000 people.  There are 217,740 searchable CBGs in the USA vs 27,797 general Zip Codes. For every report, Realscore sums the number of practitioners and all demographic data for all of the CBG's (including partial CBG’s) in the radius, drive time, and/or user-drawn search area.

What if a Search Area includes partial Census Block Groups?

A partial Census Block Group is included in the results if the geographical center of the CBG is within 600 feet of the edge of the Search Area. Only the percentage of overlap is included and added to the sum of the practitioners and all demographic data in the search area. The inclusion of partial CBGs is exclusive to Realscore.

What's included in Location Strategy?

What is a “Pocket?”

A “Pocket” is an area derived in a Market Opportunity Search that indicates a potential market for a practice. It is normally made up of a small number of full or partial Census Block Groups. The goal is to find pockets where the competition ratios are high and include Average Household Income greater than a threshold derived from your ideal target patient.

What is the rationale behind the order of your location search process?

Of all of the Location Strategy factors, Competition Ratios are the most important, barely beating out Demographics.

What gives it the edge is that you can have a location with great demographics, but if the market is saturated, it will be difficult to succeed, grow and build practice value quickly without huge investments in time and working capital spent on marketing. Therefore, it doesn’t make sense for you to pay for Demographics until the Ratio is ideal and the area is a good fit for your practice and family.

Only after passing those benchmarks does it make sense to invest in the Demographics Deep Dive to find your perfect practice location.

What is a REALratio?

A REALratio is a proprietary ratio of population to practitioners used to evaluate competition ratios to indicate when a market generally is considered to be saturated. For example, the REALratio for a General Dentist is 2,000.  A ratio higher than 2,000 would indicate the market has potential for an additional practitioner(s). A number below 2,000 indicates the area is already oversaturated and should be evaluated carefully. Each practice specialty has its own REALratio value.

What is the turnaround time?

All reports are PDFs that are emailed to you. Delivery time varies per product based on the complexity of the order, the density of the report location, the inclusion of premium services, and many other factors. We strive to deliver reports before the following approximate turnaround times:

L-Series: 2-3 Business Days

M-Series: 7-10 Business Days

C-Series: Teams/Zoom consulting sessions usually occur within 3-5 business days but varies based on the availability of participants.

What is the return policy?

All reports are a snapshot in time. Therefore, due to the digital nature of the reports and that the data changes frequently, returns and refunds are unavailable. However, our policy is to provide unmatched customer satisfaction. If something isn’t right, please contact us right away. Unfortunately, we have no control over the data results, so dissatisfaction with the results is out of our control.
